11 tips and tricks for makeup artists to brighten mature (and menopausal) skin.

From Julianne Moore and Thandiwe Newton to Anne Hathaway, Zoë Kravitz and Salma Hayek, makeup artist Kay Montano has more than a few celebrities on her client list. Over the years, Montano, who is also a Chanel makeup ambassador, has learned a thing or two about how to make skin of all ages beautiful. “I work with adult women, who are in their 30s, 40s and 50s, which I think is when women are at their peak,” she tells me on the phone. “My goal is to make their skin glow.”

Whether you’re going through perimenopause, or you just need a game plan to make tired skin glow, Montano – who’s also radiant in her fifties – shares her tips on how to create healthy looking skin (and feel) fresh along with Rowingunder.

Get ready to change your makeup and skincare routine

“The skin represents the continuous continuous changes in your life: you go from child to teenager, to adult woman, to (perhaps) pregnancy and then to menopause. When you’re young, you can get away with products that contain powder and mattifies, but by the time you’re over 30, you’ll start to find that the same product you used in your 20s no longer works. As you get older and undergo different changes, you need to change your skincare and makeup routine. “

In hormone replacement therapy

“You’ve been in perimenopause a long time before menopause,” says Montano. “If you are a person who does not want to take HRT, you will notice the lack of estrogen in your body: it will become extremely noticeable, very quickly. The skin (and the rest) dries up. Estrogen, progesterone and testosterone are vital for skin health, elasticity and skin joy of life. “

Coping with moisture loss

“When you are in the middle age stage, there is less moisture in the skin and you can see it. You can’t get away with dehydration anymore, so you have to be careful with your water intake – when you have a hangover in your twenties, you can’t see it on your skin, but skin wrinkles quickly come on later. My advice is to temporarily increase the appearance of skin hydration with skincare and makeup – the only way to increase it in the long run is to do it from the inside and maintain a great skincare routine. The beauty of makeup now is that many products are also moisturizers ”.

Wear less makeup

“The older you get, the less makeup you should wear, because there are more lines and grooves for the product on the skin and it seems to age. My absolute hate for animals is powder foundation. It wipes everything else on your face and makes you look five years older, instantly. It weakens the life of your skin, accentuates fine lines and makes the skin completely and totally opaque.

Massage away

“If I had the time and money, I would visit FaceGym [facial massage destination] twice a week. It’s brilliant, but you can also adopt some of their techniques at home using a tool like gua sha, which is really good for your skin. If you want to deal with sagging skin, a little massage can really help lift your face. If I look a little tired and tired, I use Jillian Dempsey’s gold bar. I often use it together with moisturizer to deflate my face, because half the time bad skin is just swelling anyway. Your body gets a little less good at eliminating toxins as you get older, so if you’ve eaten too much salt the night before, your cheeks will come.

To get rid of puff

“In addition to the massage, I spray very cold water on my face to deflate the skin. I also drink a lot of dandelion tea – it’s a diuretic, so if you have a swollen face, it will help. You can also take dandelion tea as a tincture, which I use when traveling. Helps with any type of water retention. Drink lots of it in the morning and you will pee until lunchtime.

It becomes bright

“I love a vitamin C serum – it really brightens your skin and I’ve found it mimics the look of youth. Vitamin C Drunk Elephant is great because it is a little sticky, but it gives the skin some shine, which makes it look younger and more radiant. If your skin is too oily before makeup, then there is old advice I got from Barbara Daly who is one of the first great makeup artists in the world. The way to know that you have the right amount of moisturizer on your skin is to use a thin handkerchief, press it to your skin and remove the excess – what’s left is what your skin needs. Then, you have lovely skin to start your makeup with.

Less is more

“I tend to leave my cheeks as transparent as possible, because that’s how you create the illusion of youth. You should only wear makeup where you absolutely must. Most people have dark circles, so I’ll only paint the concealer on those under the dark circles, rather than rubbing everything underneath. The skin here is frizzy because that’s okay, so if you put on a lot of product, suddenly you see wrinkles that you would never see before, because the skin stretches with eye movement all day. I recommend using a wand concealer, because you can paint precise semicircles: one under the inner corner of the eyebrow towards the inside of the eye and the other under the dark circle. Then press lightly on the skin, do not rub it.

T-zone makeup

“My work is about optical illusion and the creation of depth. It’s about where you put shadow and where you put shine. I’ve found that if I keep the T-zone dull using loose powder – and other brighter areas of the face – then it works well. You should use a very fine powder as they are less detectable and chalky.

The creams are gone

“Cream blushes are great, especially used with a stippled brush. Apply to the cheek pommel to create youth.

Open and lift

“Eyelash curlers are great for making eyes lively. They are almost more important than mascara, because the lashes are usually straight, so you can’t see them. Curling them helps lift and open the eyes.
