It’s a crunch time for DC United after their 3-0 loss at Queen City on Wednesday. It’s time to shake it off and go again, this time against the rival New York Red Bulls.
Back on home turf at Audi Field, the black-and-red and new manager Wayne Rooney will be looking for all three points. The last two meetings between DC United and the Red Bulls have been less than stellar, with the New Jersey side winning both times this year.
Yesterday’s signing of Christian Benteke from Crystal Palace should put some gas in the proverbial tank, but it’s a busy week with a full slate of Black-and-Red fixtures. Tired legs are sure to come into play tonight as DC United hope for a repeat of last Sunday’s stunner against Orlando.
Tonight will mark the first time Wayne Rooney has managed the black-and-red against long-time rivals New York Red Bulls. Can he lead DC United to victory?
Hear Rooney’s thoughts after DC’s last game:
Key Player: Taxi Fountas
Fountus continues to be a key player for the black-and-red. The team will look to keep the Red Bulls from a clean sheet at Audi Field tonight.
Note: Lewis Morgan (and really, all Red Bulls attack)
Morgan, the Red Bulls’ top goalscorer, will have to wait and see this evening. New Jersey’s MO have been stifling their opposition with a flurry of goals this season and they will no doubt be looking to do so tonight.
Challenges: DC United continues to rebuild the roster and work to settle into a new team rhythm. Unfortunately, injuries to key players also keep cropping up. Brendan Hynes-Ike is the latest addition to the growing list of unavailable players. He suffered a potentially season-ending injury in DC’s last game against Charlotte.
Before this: In their last two meetings, the Red Bulls have gotten the better of the Black-Red team. New Jersey went 4-1 in regular season play and 3-0 during the Lamar Hunt Open Cup.
