How To Clean A Refrigerator And Freezer: 6 Spots You Don’t Want To Miss | Architectural Digest

The fridge and freezer should be a happy place – a dish of favorite delicious foods, snacks and leftovers. But if you don’t know how to clean the refrigerator and maintain the icebox on a regular basis, this pair of equipment won’t be happy forever.

The good news: the refrigerator doesn’t need to be made too often. In fact, Jennifer Walker, owner of Simple Beach Living, a professional conglomerate in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, recommends setting a 15-minute timer every six months for a bit of maintenance. Start by throwing outdated bottles, jars and packets of soy sauce. Apply the wardrobe trick when decluttering: If you don’t finish that strawberry jelly in a month, you probably won’t eat it after three months. Wiping the outside once a week, especially if it is stainless steel equipment, will make the fridge look fresh.

Check out our easy-to-follow guide on how to clean a refrigerator and freezer.

Clean the coils

Each fridge has its own unique features. Some have coils behind the base grill, under the fridge; Some coils are in the back of the fridge; And, others have coils on the top of the fridge covered in paneling. To access the scrolls, you may need to pop the panel off or not rotate. Wherever they are, clean the coils every six months to a year, says appliance tech Chad Delaney, co-owner of the Delaney service in Ponte Vedra, Florida. Dirty curls should work hard to dissipate heat and keep your food cool. This means that dirty coils increase energy costs and the fridge is aging faster. Delaney says pet hair builds on condenser coils. “If you have a big-haired dog, you should clean curls at least every six months,” he says. Use a nozzle in a vacuum to absorb all the dust and pet hair. Bonus points if you pull the fridge off the wall, then vacuum up all the junk in the back. It could be a two-person gig.

Scrub the inner walls

Keep the fridge temperature at the best possible rate by cleaning the inside as the gun begins to build. According to Delany you should remove everything in the fridge and put it on the nearest countertop. Then take a non-scratch sponge or towel and moisten it with water and a mild cleaner, liquid dishwashing detergent or baking soda and homemade blend.

Get into the cracks

Delaney recommends using cotton swabs or a soft toothbrush to get rid of cracks and corners in difficult-to-reach areas such as lining the glass shelves. Dry everything with paper towels or towels before returning the groceries. Also important, keep the door gasket clean with a mild dish detergent. If the gasket is too dirty, it won’t hold the seal when you close the fridge door.

Clean the ice maker

Scale build-up causes the ice to adhere to the evaporation plates and causes problems with condensation and activation. The frequency of cleaning depends on the use, Delaney says. If you have a large family and run the machine frequently, take an ice bin and wash it in a kitchen sink with a soft cleaner. Trying to clean the ice maker while in the freezer can freeze the cleaner. Dry in air or towel before putting the bin in the freezer.

Replace fridge water filters

Replace fridge water filters every six months. Add this function to your smartphone calendar, Walker recommends. However, if you do not consume fridge ice and water every day, you can probably get away with changing the water filter, Delaney notes. When it comes to replacement filters, find the original device manufacturer’s brand because it works well.

Deal with fruit flies in the fridge

You think the fridge’s tundra environment kills fruit flies, but it’s not always the case. Delaney has seen fruit flies put down a fully functioning fridge first. To prevent problems, wash the fruit before putting it in the fridge, Delaney says. Frank Fraser of Zetzer in Jacksonville, Florida, recommends a vinegar and mild soap solution to clean the Fruit Fly Undead equipment vendor. “It’s a mess if they get into the drain,” he says of the back wall opening inside the fridge, where debris can accumulate. Clean the drain with warm water and a bath bottle brush.
