How to count directories with text in Google Sheets

Using Google Sheets COUNTA And COUNTIF Functions, you can count directories that contain any text, specific text, or partially matching text. This is a great way to find non-empty directories in your spreadsheets and we’ll show you how to use these functions.

Which cell counting method should be used?

If you want to find a count of cells containing any text or numbers, use the first method below. This counts the number of all non-empty cells in your specified data range.

If you want to find the number of cells that contain a particular string of text or numbers, use the second method below. This allows you to specify your text string and then counts only the cells that contain your text string.

Lastly, if you want to count cells that contain your specified text and any other content, use the third method below. This method counts them as long as they contain your text in your directories.

Count the cells that contain any text

To get the number of cells containing any text or numbers, use COUNTA Work in your spreadsheet as follows.

First, open your spreadsheet and click on the cell where you want to view the result.

Select the directory.

In the cell you selected, type the following function. In action, change C2:C11 With your data range. Then press enter.

=COUNTA(C2:C11)

Enter the COUNTA function.

In your selected cell, you will see the number of cells with any text or numbers.

Count the cells that match the specified text

To see the number of cells containing your specific text, use sheets. COUNTIF Function as follows.

First, in your spreadsheet, click the cell where you want to view the result.

Select the directory.

In the cell you selected, enter the following function. Change C2:C11 With your data range and Mahesh You want to count a cell with text.

= COUNTIF (C2: C11, “Mahesh”)

Type the COUNTIF function.

Then press enter.

In the selected cell, you will see the number of cells containing your specific text.

Count directories containing text anywhere

To count directories that contain your specified text or numbers anywhere, use COUNTIF Works with the wildcard character as follows.

In your spreadsheet, click the cell where you want the result.

Select the directory.

In the cell you selected, type the following function. In this function, edit C2:C11 With your data range and Mahesh You want to count a cell with text. Then press enter.

We have added an asterisk

=COUNTIF(C2:C11,"*Mahesh*")

The function counts your cells wherever they are in your string cell before and after the text string.

Use the COUNTIF function with the wildcard.

As a result, in the cell, you will find that the function has counted all the cells that contain your specific text anywhere in it.
