How to use an electric generator
It is a hurricane season and several have already caused breakdowns in Cincinnati and statewide.
Portable power generators are an ideal solution during these breakdowns. Generators are usually powered by gas, propane, or whatever. Some may be solar powered.

If you think you may need to use your power generator, make sure you have enough fuel in your hand. If you have a solar generator, make sure it is charged.
The first step to setting up your generator is to measure how much power you need to use. Most people want to turn on their refrigerators and lights, as well as be able to charge the devices.
It is important to note how much power you need to avoid overloading the power generator.
Where do I put my generator?
Gas or propane-powered generators must be kept at least 20 feet outside the home. It should sit on a flat, sturdy surface and the exhaust should move away from the windows and doors of the home.
Solar generators do not emit carbon monoxide, which means they can be kept indoors as long as they are dry in the high temperature. Check your generator manual for more details.
How do I plug my generator?
Generators require specific heavy duty extension cords, so make sure you are using these. For gas-powered generators, run the ropes through a window or door, but don’t plug them into the generator yet.
Plugging the generator into the socket does not power your home. Follow the steps below to regain energy. An electrician can tell you more about how to power your home in these situations.
How do I turn on my generator?
Solar generators turn on with a button or switch, but fuel-powered generators are a bit more complicated.
For fuel-driven generators:
- Make sure the fuel tank is full and no ropes attached to the generator.
- Turn on the fuel valve.
- Turn on / off switch.
- Find a chalk that usually looks like a lever. Pull it into the chalk position, opening at least a quarter or half to let air out.
- Hold the start switch until the generator starts.
- Slowly push the chalk handle into the run position (fully open). Let the generator run for a few minutes before plugging anything into it.
How do I plug things into my generator?
You may need to plug things that require the least amount of power from your power generator. For example, you may need to plug your refrigerator first and let it run for a while before plugging in something else. Check your manual for specific details for your generator.
Each item must be connected to the generator extension card, which you can then plug into the cord generator.
How do I refuel my generator?
To refuel the generator, turn off all electronics and equipment connected to it. Let it run for a while before turning the on / off switch off. Turn off the fuel switch and unplug the extension cords.
Finally, you should allow the generator to cool before adding more fuel.
For solar generators, contact the solar panels and place them in an area with sufficient sunlight. Depending on your generator, you may be able to plug the devices in while charging.
