MURAL SOUTH ORANGE DOWNTOWN PROJECT – CALL FOR ARTISTS

South Orange Downtown (SODT) is looking for mural artists to create an original site-specific mural to be completed on the Village Plaza Triangle Retaining Wall at the corner of Valley Street and Village Plaza. As part of a broader triangle revitalization initiative, this mural will be a lively and welcoming entry point into the city center. The mural will be painted directly onto the textured wall of the building, it can be of any style and should represent “energy” as it connects to light and harmony. The selected mural should serve as a community celebration for years to come.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT
The SODT will hire a skilled artist or team of artists to design and install works that local residents can enjoy, enhance the look of the business district, and attract visitors. The goal of the South Orange Downtown Village Plaza Mural Project is to create public art that conveys the theme of “energy” and reflects the vibrancy of the city center as it connects with harmony and light.
SODT released this Call for Artists to present a conceptual statement for the Village Plaza Triangle Mural that conveys a theme of energy, curriculum and samples of their work. Three the artists will be selected to present a concept sketch. The chosen artist will receive a fee of up to $ 7,000 and runners-up will receive $ 250 for submitting the concept sketch.
SODT asks artists to complete the online application which will include:
- conceptual statement for Village Plaza Triangle
- bio or resume with contact information
- work portfolio example of a link to your website or up to 5 digital images.
- two professional references with contact information
- link to the website and social media
A selection committee made up of creative professionals, community members and representatives of SODT will select the finalists based on their mural proposals. SODT will have the final approval of the mural design.
The artist or artists chosen to paint the mural will receive a fee of up to $ 7,000, including materials and supplies.

- 27 June – 1 July 2022 Examination of proposals and selection of 3 three artists to make conceptual sketches
- 1 August 2022- Concept Sketches submitted by 3 finalists
- August 15, 2022 – Selected final artist
- 22 August 2022 – 8 October – The start and completion of the project will take place during this time frame
- 15 October 2022 – Public inauguration of the work
